MAD Concaves

Our experience with MAD concaves has been awesome! We ran a different set of concaves in one combine and MAD’s in the other. In the combine with the ‘one set does all,’ we had a lot of trouble setting the combine, but with the MADs it was a world of difference! It took us half the time to set the combine; it was very easy to change the inserts, and when we did, the quality was so much better!

We’ve been using the Mini Combine to sample wheat, canola, and beans, and it’s been a great tool on our farm. It works really well for wheat and beans, and while canola can take a little longer to sample, it’s still far quicker and more convenient than moving a full-size combine just to check a field.

MAD Concaves

Switching to MAD Concaves gave us an immediate bump in performance. In canola, we picked up close to 0.5 mph while maintaining the same loss levels. In soybeans, running fingers up front with I-grates behind gave us smooth crop flow, minimal damage, and strong capacity. Tightening the concave also let us lower rotor speed and move material through faster, which helped reduce splits. Overall, MAD Concaves have given us more capacity, better grain quality, and the flexibility to fine-tune performance across crops.

The Smartpan is an essential tool, regardless of the size of your farm. We operate three combines, and before acquiring the Smartpan, we lacked a way to compare losses between machines. We run a 2020 S790 and a 2016 S690 they both performed identically with MAD concaves in. In wheat we were running 1,450BPH easily and in the heat of the day up to 1,700ish picking up 300BPH of production per machine over OEM Concaves. in wheat I was running OEM small wire concaves and with mad concaves dockage dropped down to 0.5% it would probably run straight through an air seeder without any more cleaning.

Soybeans with O-grate was a super clean sample and looked like clean seed in the tank, with way less seed damage than round bar

Canola was the biggest winner; dockage went from 2-3% with small wire and hard to set the combine to being really easy to set and down to 0.8-1.2% dockage. We don’t try for a super clean sample in canola but it was really easy to get these dockage numbers without sacrificing losses

The BranValt Drop Pan has become an essential tool for our harvest operation. It has allowed us to reduce losses from over 2 bushels per acre to as low as under 0.5 bushel per acre.

What makes it especially valuable for us is that we run identical combines. Once we’ve dialled in the settings on one machine using the drop pan, we can match the second combine and simply use the pan to fine-tune. It takes the guesswork out of the process and gives us confidence that both machines are performing at their best.

At the end of the day, the BranValt Drop Pan improves efficiency, reduces losses, and ultimately keeps more money in our pockets. It’s a simple tool that delivers real, measurable results.

We run a custom harvest business out of Minnedosa, MB. The best part of the concaves is the ability to harvest basically everything with finger grates and 375’s (other than wheat). Losses are down, product flows through the machine better, there’s less downtime, and the sample is cleaner.  We actually found (by accident) this past year that finger grates and 375’s work in wheat, as I missed swapping the fingers out on one unit.

All 3 machines now have MAD concaves in them, and will be experimenting more with the finger grates.

Also like the fact that they are made right here in Westman.  Built heavy and made to last, peas can take a toll on concaves sometimes, but these stand up well.

We did some late reseeded canola the last day or two, and honestly, we didn’t want to change the concaves. We’re going from edible beans to canola, then into sunflowers and corn — so we figured we’d just leave the O-Grates in. Mostly because we were feeling lazy.

But the O-Grates worked amazing in canola.

I’ve got them in all four positions and it’s doing a terrific job. Hardly any rotor loss. I kept turning up the sensitivity thinking something was wrong — but nope, it’s just working that well.

The canola isn’t super dry — about 9.5% moisture with some green stems — but the tank is stupid clean. Normally there’s way more chaff, so I kept thinking something wasn’t right. We’ve been checking behind the combines and everything looks great.

I’m running them at .6 clearance, rotors at 580, and I’m really happy with what’s coming out the back. But what’s really impressive is the lack of chaff in the hopper. Doesn’t feel like I’m over-threshing or overloading the sieves. The re-thrasher is clean, and the sample looks so good it almost feels wrong.

Didn’t expect this kind of performance in canola — but I’m seriously impressed.

“Running an older combine, I didn’t have the capabilities of a newer machine and often had to sacrifice either grain loss or sample quality. New crop varieties are harder to thresh, and I was losing grain with the straw despite having rotor capacity.
After talking to other growers, I ordered a set of MAD O-Grates. In the first field, I saw an instant change—cleaner sample, reduced loss, and smoother flow. My neighbor borrowed the combine and asked, ‘Why doesn’t your combine grunt?’ The MAD concaves were the only difference. The BranValt team gave great advice and helped fine-tune settings. Swapping concaves is now a breeze and I saw great results in the overall efficiency of the combine and cleanliness of the hopper. I used the drop pan to sample loss behind the combine which aided in me making adjustments to combine settings accordingly. This gave me much more ease of mind knowing my combine was set right. In my honest opinion the concaves paired with the drop pan increased my yield that made it from the field to the elevator. The team at BranValt was available for any questions I had regarding configurations and settings for my combine. The hardest part is taking the old ones out but the MAD Concaves are easy to install once you get the split frames in. Very simple. Once you have them in you’re good to go. Just some fine tuning in the machine settings. The concaves are definitely performing how we want them to. Less splitting, and more definitely getting more capacity out of them.”

“We raise wheat, canola, flax, soybeans and sunflowers. The factory concaves on my New Holland combines were large and heavy which meant for me to change them, I had to find one or two other people to help, and the process took over an hour for each machine. With the BranValt MAD Concaves, I can have both machines changed over in about 30 minutes with no extra help needed. Not only does this save time and a backache, but I can also get the combine set properly in changing conditions instead of just say it’s good enough with the old concaves. We’ve also seen a cleaner sample and picked up speed in the field over the factory concaves making these a no-brainer to run.”

We installed our MAD Concaves in our 9870 for the 2024 harvest season and ran it along side our 9760 with OEM concaves. We did drop pans in wheat and were able to increase our speed by 0.5mph with significantly less loss from the combine compared to the other combine with OEM concaves. We noticed cleaner samples and slower rotor speeds as well in other crops as yellow peas and canola. We also greatly enjoy the ease of changing inserts for different crop types over changing the whole concaves with the OEM.

The team helped us through the settings and configurations particularly as we go through some tougher conditions in the late fall. We’re seeing upwards of a half mile an hour increase in our durum, great sample and overall very easy to change inserts between conditions. What we love about them is their robust built quality and simple style of design where you can switch the inserts without using filler plates anymore. If we do suffer rock damage it’s an easy switch out. Moreso, we’re seeing an improvement in capacity and quality in our threshed sample, which is money in our jeans.”

We started working with the O-Grate concave system. We were having issues with our edible beans with cracking and grain loss in the back. They got us down from 2.5 bu/ac to .2-.4 bu/ac loss. Same with the corn – we were having issues with stripping the cobbs clean without breaking the cobbs up into a whole lot of debris. The O-Grates eliminated that issue making it a lot nicer threshing with a lot less damage and dockage in the hoppers.
